Blame the baby... and the weather!

Ugh, Baby A developed a nasty sounding cough on Tuesday (doesn't seem to bother her though), and big brother S had some green snot.  The Y's daycare pointed these out to me on Tuesday, so I thought I'd better keep the kids away for a few days. So no aquafit for me (although my skin is enjoying the break from the chlorine!)

I managed to get a great walk in on Wednesday (despite waking with a migraine that morning - yay for hubby who stayed home & watched the kids while I slept it off), and a couple of short walks on Thurs & Fri. (despite some icky weather... looks like winter is FINALLY here!).

I haven't been eating particularly well though... I think I'm going to have to make a drastic resolution to STOP buying coffees. Not only will it save me calories, but also a ton of money. I can still get my caffeine fix at home (yay for our espresso machine!!), but I figure if I make it, then at least I'm burning a few more calories right? Although then I won't walk to the coffee shop...  aah, dilemmas! Still, I gotta stop drinking the calories... it's such a bad habit.

RESOLUTION:  From now on, I'm only allowed to buy coffee if I'm meeting someone at a cafe & sitting there to drink it.  No more walking & drinking!

Ooh, which brings me to another problem - walking & eating (or standing and eating).  I really need to start sitting down to eat - to make me more aware of what I'm eating, and to stop the constant snacking on the go.  I'm trying to instigate a more rigid snack/meal schedule for S in line with the Ellyn Satter Division of Responsibility school of thought.  So it makes sense for me to only eat at these times too, right?

I've often said that if I just ate what I serve S, then I'd have no problem losing or maintaining my weight - but it's all the "extras" that sneak in between meals that are killing me. Easier said than done, but I'm gonna try!

RESOLUTION:  I'm allowed to eat as much as I want, but it can only be at our set meal/snack times and can only be food that I also serve to S (whether or not he eats it is a WHOLE other story).

Starting strong...

Week 1 at the Y is going really well.
I'm LOVING the challenge of getting up & out of the house for the 9am aqua-fit class.  It makes me feel so organized and "with it" for the rest of the day when I'm out of the house with a plan for the morning. The ladies (and a couple of men) in the class are great too... it's mostly the same people each time, and while most are pretty old, there are a few in their 30s and 40s too.
Although I was aiming to make it to the 9am class every day this week, Tuesday morning's class just didn't happen after a night of getting up & down with Baby A, so I did my own pool workout (lap swimming & aqua-fit exercises) after S's 123 Grow class instead of going to aqua-fit before his class.  And then today I had my "fitness orientation" with one of the trainers (which included some strength training & stretches) after his class, so I had to "save" my 1.5hrs childcare to cover that, rather than aqua-fit. And tomorrow is Baby A's 6 month checkup at the Dr, so I'll have the car & will be completing the weekly errands, so I'll probably skip a workout altogether tomorrow, unless I can get motivated to go in the evening (unlikely!).
S is loving the "kids corner" childcare, as well as the 123 Grow session that they hold on Tues & Thurs. Annabel is doing ok at the childcare... although she doesn't like to take a bottle from them (luckily it's only 1.5hrs!).

Gym bunny!!!

Woohoo, we're all joined up as members of the Y, and ventured over there today for a family swim.
The water was warm, but the air was a little chilly, as only the outdoor pool was open for rec swimming at the time we went. S was super excited but also a little hesitant at first, but soon warmed up (figuratively, not literally... he started shivering almost immediately, like he did last summer in our apartment's non-heated pool).
Baby A (almost 6 months now!) was a trooper with her first ever swim, and even let me dunk her under twice!!
After a short swim, H went home for some peace & quiet, while I checked the kids into "kids corner" & did my first workout:
30mins on the elliptical.
1.2miles.
150cals.

On thursday I get my orientation at the gym, jncluding my "fitlinxx" doohickey.
This automatically tracks any machine (cardio or weights) workout you do, remembers your settings, etc, and you can manually enter any non-machine workout you do too.
I'm hoping there's some way of easily sharing that info from the doohickey to my blog, but I guess I'll find out on thurs.
(PS - S loved the kids corner... was having so much fun he didn't want to stop & eat his lunch when the teacher asked! Baby A not so much... she refused to take a bottle from them... but guzzled it down as soon as I arrived to hold her. Hopefully things improve there...).

Change of plan...

Ok, so this whole food-diary thing just isn't working for me. Two kids, housework & life in general is leaving me little time (or motivation) to keep track of everything I eat (and makes me think about food even more!).
So I'm changing track.  We're about to buy a family membership to the Y because we want to enroll Stu in swimming lessons and it works out cheaper to enroll the whole family (well, kind of - better value might be the correct term here).
As well as swimming lessons (and gym/music and reading classes) for the kids, they have a full gym/pool/etc and offer 1.5hrs free childcare per day, so I'm going to start working out EVERY day (at least during the week - I might take weekends off) and then not worry so much about what I'm eating.
Let's hope I can make it stick this time!!

Back on the wagon...

Ok, so I totally flaked last time... I didn't keep up with my food log, and subsequently didn't watch what I ate, and now the scale is back up at a number that I thought I'd left behind.
Both hubby & I are trying to be good this month food-wise, and do more exercise... so hopefully this time will be more successful! I've also given up facebook, so that should give me a bit more time to record food intake & plan meals!
